Self-care
Philippians 2:3-4 New King James Version
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Everyone Else
Do we put others before ourselves? I’m not talking about just our spouse and children. That is a given. Something that feels almost automatic. It’s easy to put those we love deeply before ourselves, but what about everyone else?
What Does It Mean?
To esteem others means to prioritize others’ needs, listening with genuine respect, and recognizing their value, without demeaning your own worth. Let’s take a moment to reflect on that definition.
Those people that annoy us. The ones who do us wrong and talk about us. Are we able to prioritize their needs and listen to them with genuine respect? Are we able to recognize their value?
Self-care
We are surrounded by a culture that puts “me” first above everyone else. The “self-care” generation that shuts people out without notice, without regard to anyone else’s feelings, or needs while justifying it with quick psychological definitions that don’t even truly apply to them (or us).
It’s important to take care of yourself by prioritizing quiet prayer and study time with God. However if His word clearly states that we must put others before ourselves I’m pretty sure that trumps any personal feelings we may have.
Matthew 22:37-40, Romans 12:10, Ephesians 5:21
**Lord, thank You for always answering my prayers in the way that is best. Forgive me for the times I have been selfish and put myself above others. Help me to do better in the future. Please help me to recognize when I’m being selfish and show me the right way Lord. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.**
