The Harvest is Plenty

The Harvest is Plenty

Luke 10:2

2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

The harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few. We hear it all the time, but do you ever stop and think that you just might be the laborer for the job? Jesus came to serve and that’s what we are here to do also.

Every Church

Our church has had the worst time lately finding people willing to work in the nursery. We have many that don’t really do much of anything, a small group that does everything and then one or two who do just enough to not feel bad about not helping when it’s actually needed.

I’m sure that sounds like every other church in the country! But as I began to think about our nursery issue this morning something began to burn inside of me. I’ve heard the comment “we should just leave it open for moms.”. I don’t believe those who think that way truly understand the importance of the nursery ministry, and it is a ministry.

Why Bother?

When I was a young mom with a baby, I attended a church that had the nursery “open for moms”. At the time I was a single mom. So, I would struggle to get myself and my child ready for church only to come and sit in the nursery with my own child for about an hour and a half. I did it so often that I just stopped going. What was the point of struggling to get ready and get there on time just to sit in a room with my own child every service.

There are mothers of young children who need that quiet time in the Lord’s presence. They need a chance to kneel at an altar without worrying about their child or hearing them fuss. Couples with small babies and toddlers need the opportunity to go to an altar together and receive what the Lord has for them. That is why the nursery is such an important ministry. If we are the church then we should be willing to serve those within it. We can not claim to love God and His people if we are not willing to help them.

Be The Church

We pray for our churches to grow and for God to send the people, but just as the scripture says, the harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few. Why would God send a church full of people who need Him, who need a church family, if the church isn’t willing to step up and serve?

Matthew 20:28, Colossians 3:23-24, Matthew 23:11

**Lord thank You for helping us to see the areas we need to do better in. Remind us Lord that it’s not about what we want or what feels comfortable but what helps serve others. Forgive us for our laziness and selfishness and show us how we can do more. Send the laborers Lord! In Jesus name I pray, Amen. **
