Don’t Be Fooled
1 Corinthians 15:33-34
33 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” 34 Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.
In this particular scripture Paul was speaking to the Corinthians. They were hanging around people who were spreading false teachings and living unrighteously. The same warning applies to our lives today.
It Matters
Who we spend our time with matters. It’s not about “do they believe the same as me”, but It’s about whether they believe and follow God’s word.
We are supposed to love and help everyone. I mean even Jesus ate with the sinners, right? The difference was He was an influence on them. God sent Him to those people to help change them, to help them see the error of their ways. He did not send His son to be influenced by them.
False Teachings
False teachings can be very tricky. So much so that you may not even recognize it while it’s happening. Your very trusted friend could share a sermon online and you listen and get sucked right in only to realize halfway though that while it might have sounded good it wasn’t the true word of God.
The only way to be able to recognize false teachings and unrighteous living is to read God’s word for yourself. To spend time with Him in a relationship. Yes you will know a tree by the fruit it bears, but some people are very good at lying, for a little while.
Read & Know
Read God’s word for yourself. Seek Him and His ways so you will not be fooled by anything someone says just because it sounds good.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 says “3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”
Don’t just look for the parts of God’s word that make you feel good. Take it all in and allow Him to change you.
**Lord thank You for the truth of Your word. God, I ask for discernment to recognize false teachings and unrighteous living and the wisdom to know how to handle it. If there is anything I believe that is not true I ask that You reveal it to me so I may set my mind right. Lord, I ask that you give me a strong desire and determination to read Your word for myself so I cannot be led astray. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. **
