Tough Love
Colossians 3:12
12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;
As Christians we are called to be compassionate and understanding of others. To have compassion for another means to have sympathetic pity and concern for their sufferings or misfortunes.
Suck It Up
For a long time when people would tell me their problems my first instinct would be to tell them to suck it up. I know that sounds terrible, but my whole life I received nothing but tough love. Now I know that there are times when tough love is necessary, but not always.
God dealt with me about it one day and it was like a repositioning of my heart where others were concerned.
He helped me to see past whatever they were doing or what they were going through to the deeper need, the deeper understanding. I have to say it is most freeing to be compassionate and understanding of others rather than trying to “fix them” with tough love all of the time.
A lot of factors go into where a person is at mentally, physically, circumstantially and emotionally. When we look past the situation itself into the deeper need, we can begin to show compassion and understanding.
The Way He Sees
God sees the things we cannot. He knows the things each of us has faced in our lives that have shaped us into who we are now. He knows why we do the things we do, even if we don’t. We might look at someone and think we have the answers that will fix them but only God truly knows what they need.
If, like I once was, you are having trouble being compassionate and understanding of others, ask God to open your heart. To see others as He sees them. It will definitely change your life and allow you to see everyone, even yourself, in a new and better way. Doing this will also help you to be effective in ministering to those who are lost, broken and hurting.
Philippians 2:3-4, 1 Peter 4:8, Ephesians 4:2-3
**Lord thank You for changing my heart and helping me to see others the way you do. I ask that you show me when I should be understanding and compassionate overusing tough love so I can help others. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. **
