What Is Humility?
Philippians 2:3-4
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
I had a thought this morning and it was this: What is humility? What does it really mean to truly be humble? So I began to do a little research and found a few different things. Hang in here with me and see if it opens your eyes the way it did mine.
What Is Humility?
Humility is defined in a few different ways. Humility from a biblical aspect is a deep recognition of one’s dependence on God and a willingness to serve others. Of course as Christians this is the definition that should be at the top of our list, but I believe that in order to serve others we should know the other definitions of the word as well.
Next, Google defines it as a modest or low opinion of one’s own importance. Also a state of being unpretentious, modest and respectful without arrogance or a sense of superiority. A humble person has an accurate view of themselves and their accomplishments, acknowledging limitations and recognizing the value of others.
My Own Words?
Now, what does that mean in my own words? It’s a heart thing. We can go through the motions that we believe show humility, but if deep inside we don’t truly feel them then our actions are all in vain. I love where it says “recognizing the value of others”. How often are we truly appreciative of what someone else has to offer? No jealousy, no nit picking what they do and how they do it. Just genuine appreciation for what they bring to the table, or the church….
When I read the Biblical definition it caused me to examine myself quickly. The first part said a deep recognition of one’s dependence on God. We say that we know all we have is because of Him, but do we put our jobs first in our lives because it pays the bills.
Self-Examination
We often pray and say we want God’s will, but the moment it doesn’t go the way we want it to we fall apart and act foolish like a toddler. After praying and asking God to do the impossible we try to find a back up plan or a way to do it ourselves. That doesn’t seem like recognition of dependence on God does it?
The second half of that is a willingness to serve others. His word says that we do everything as though we were doing it unto the Lord. It doesn’t say do it with an attitude that says; “If I don’t, no one else will”. It also doesn’t say to complain about it the whole time or talk about those who aren’t serving.
It Starts In Your Heart
Humility isn’t just about looking humble to others. It’s not about your actions making you seem humble. Being humble starts in your heart. It is a true desire to exemplify the fruit of the spirit for the benefit of others and to please God. God doesn’t have favorites so no matter how much you do, it will never make Him favor you over someone else.
Will you take a few moments, as I did this morning, to study within yourself in this area? If you are truly humble in heart, it will come out in sincere actions.
Corinthians 10:31, Colossians 3:12, Matthew 23:12
**Lord thank You for always knowing what I need and when I need it. I ask that these things and scriptures go deep into my heart and never leave. I want what You want in my life Lord even if it doesn’t look the way I think it should. Help me to be sensitive to the leading of Your Holy Spirit in these and all matters. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.**
