More Than You Can Take?

More Than You Can Take?

1 Corinthians 10:13 New King James Version

13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Pay Attention

I believe that this scripture is often misquoted. We like to say “God won’t give you more than you can handle”. That is just not accurate and this scripture if looked at as a whole tells you why.

See we will face trials and temptations that are too much for us to handle if we are operating out of our flesh man. You know, the selfish side that wants what it wants and doesn’t consider much else other than how it feels. However, this scripture clearly says that the Lord will make a way of escape for you so that you will be able to bear whatever  you have been presented with.

The Situation

The problem comes when we have to think rationally and make a decision that goes against how we feel. If we are presented with a situation where we would like to tell someone exactly what we think of them because we have had enough and put up with their disrespect and ugliness for too long, we might feel like there is no other option.

The truth is no matter how long it’s gone on God has given us instructions in His word on how to handle this situation and others like it. We just have to purpose in our heart  if we are going to handle His way or our way.

Same Principle

That was just one example, but the same principle applies to every temptation and every situation. We must put whatever we are going through and whatever we are feeling next to the word of God. Within His word is the instruction for our way of escape. We just have to choose to follow His word and not our feelings.

Choices

It won’t be easy. Sure, we could easily “justify” acting selfishly instead of according to God’s word and we could even find some people to back us up and say it was ok. The truth is it’s not and we will have to come back around to the same mountain until we choose to handle it God’s way.

What will you choose today?

Matthew 4:1-11, Joshua 24:15, Matthew 6:33

**Lord, thank You for reminding me that Your word provides all I need for every situation I will ever face. I ask that You give me the determination, the wisdom and the understanding needed to spend as much time as I can in Your word. I know that if I don’t spend time in it I won’t know it. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.**
