What Does Ungodly Actually Mean?
Psalm 1 NKJV
1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
What Does It Mean?
As I read Psalm 1 this morning a single question popped into my mind. What does it mean to be ungodly? See, the longer I live the more I hear people back away from Godly, righteous living and yell mercy and forgiveness louder and louder.
I know He’s a God of love and mercy and forgiveness, but I also know His word says “ be ye holy for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44-46). So, What does it mean to be ungodly?
When I looked it up this is what it said :
“In the Bible, ungodly refers to individuals or actions actively opposing God’s nature, will, and authority. It describes a state of irreverence, wicked behavior, or acting without regard for God, often characterized by deliberate sinful disobedience, pride, and the rejection of divine truth.”
What Is His Nature?
The next question that came to mind was this, what is God’s nature? There were many things that described Him. Eternal, sovereign, an unchanging Spirit, holy and pure, loving, merciful. If we are not to oppose God’s nature, then we are to be like Him. Meaning we are to be holy and pure, merciful and loving.
What’s God’s Will?
I also wondered if we are not to oppose His will what would that look like? Well, we spend so much time searching for God’s will that we forget His word tells us exactly what His will for us is over and over again. His will is that we tell the world about Him. That we forgive as He has forgiven us. Love our neighbor as ourselves and to not think more highly of ourselves than we ought to. His will is that we pray without ceasing.
To deliberately do anything that the Lord says is sin in His word is to be ungodly.
**Lord, help me to never forget what it truly means to be ungodly. Keep my spiritual eyes opened to the lies the enemy is telling the rest of the world and I ask that You continue to give me a boldness to share the truth with everyone willing to listen. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. **
