Life & Not Death
Exodus 20:13
13 Thou shalt not kill.
Ten Commandments
In Exodus the Lord Himself gave the ten commandments. Whether you are a Christian or not at some point in your life you have probably heard all ten. Today I want us to look at this one. Thou shalt not kill.
Did you know there are many different ways to kill someone and I’m not talking about murder. While that is the most obvious and should be taken seriously I want to look at a few different things.
A Million Ways to Kill
First the plain and simple. Physically killing another person is wrong. The Bible says it flat out. That is why the point of justification for abortion is to say that a baby in the womb is not an actual person. They fail to point out at the very moment of conception there is a literal spark that happens when life is created. Abortion is murder.
Next I want us to think about how we talk about people. You can kill someone’s reputation and someone’s spirit, their hope and their joy, with the words you speak. The Bible has many scripture pertaining to the words we speak and how much power they hold. As a matter of fact Proverbs 18:21 says that life and death are in the power of the tongue. That doesn’t just apply to our personal circumstances, but to those around us as well.
If you have a friend or a family member that may not be doing so well in life, and may be making bad choices, if you choose to talk about how bad they are and all the awful and destructive things they are doing while still continuing to pray for them, one is canceling out the other.
We don’t deny the reality of a situation but speak life into it. Instead of talking about all the bad things, say things more like “well it isn’t good right now, but God is going to turn it around!”. That kind of talk really makes all of the difference. The same can be said for health issues.
Watch Your Mouth
The last thing I want us to think about is this, and I already quickly mentioned it. Killing someone’s reputation. Even if you have firsthand knowledge of someone’s behavior and habits. Even if you know something is absolutely true, don’t talk about people.
God has shown me in the last few years that each of us is quite different. We come from different kinds of families, different backgrounds, and different traumas. A lot of times others don’t have any idea why they do what they do and they don’t even realize how bad it is until it’s too late and they have to figure out how to break free of whatever it is.
Gossip gives the devil glory and will keep us bound by someone else’s bad behavior. If you’re going to talk about someone, talk to God about them, not everyone else.
Proverbs 18:21, Proverbs 15:4, James 3:5-6
**Lord thank You for showing me how damaging the words we speak can be. I ask that You put a watchman over my mouth that I might not sin against You and that the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You Lord. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.**
