Finders Keepers

Finders Keepers

Deuteronomy 22:1-3 New King James Version

22 “You shall not see your brother’s ox or his sheep going astray, and hide yourself from them; you shall certainly bring them back to your brother. 2 And if your brother is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall remain with you until your brother seeks it; then you shall restore it to him. 3 You shall do the same with his donkey, and so shall you do with his garment; with any lost thing of your brother’s, which he has lost and you have found, you shall do likewise; you must not hide yourself.

Finder’s Keepers

While reading these scriptures this morning a phrase I’ve heard quite often kept running through my mind. “Finders Keepers”. Have you ever heard that? We find things on the ground, the side of the road, in lockers, public bathrooms, the beach, all kinds of places. What are we supposed to do with them? Most of us, unless it’s a wallet or something of that importance, would probably just take it home.

A week or so ago my teenage son came home from work and told me that he had found $20 on the floor inside the area he worked in. He then told me that later the man he worked with asked him if he’d seen it. My son said yes and handed him the money he’d found.

I will be totally honest here as a mother, I was a little shocked that the first reaction of my child was not to ask around if anyone had lost any money, even if he did promptly return it to its rightful owner. “Finders Keepers”. That’s what we say, all the time. We don’t realize that fun little saying is something children take literally.

His Word Says

God’s word says that if we find something that belongs to someone else, we should do our best to return it to whom it belongs. We don’t keep it for ourselves or even avoid the situation all together. We are to help others and put them before ourselves.

What are we teaching our children with our words and actions? The words we speak have the power to change things and influence people, especially children. Are we throwing out fun phrases we’ve heard our whole lives not knowing if they are even biblical or not?

Sure, that may seem a little extreme, but is it actually?

**Lord thank You for Your word that instructs me in every area of my life. Every circumstance I could face You have already given direction within Your word. I ask that You continue to give me the desire to read more of Your word daily so I will be in closer connection with You and Your ways. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. **
