Jesus Flipped Tables

Matthew 21:12-13

12 Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”

“Jesus flipped tables”. We like to throw that phrase around a lot. But do we actually know why He flipped those tables?

Jesus walked into the temple, God’s house, the house of prayer and they had turned it into nothing more than an overpriced flea market to make money for themselves and in the process take advantage of people who needed what they had to sell.

Why Was He Mad?

That’s what Jesus was mad about. He was mad because they had made a mockery of the house of prayer! He wasn’t mad because someone said something He didn’t like. He wasn’t mad because things weren’t going His way. Jesus had a righteous anger for the treatment of God’s house!!!

We take the phrase “Jesus flipped tables” and use it as a justification for our poor behaviour. Our own angry outbursts can not be compared to Jesus’ righteous anger. The two are incomparable!

The Church Today?

Could you imagine if He walked into the church today how many tables would be flipped? We put our coffee houses in them, we have events and take every classroom, every prayer room and put a booth inside that sells whatever people have to make money off of and we call it a “conference”. What is the difference between that and what was happening in this scripture?

Not a thing, that’s what.

We can not continue to manipulate scripture to bend to our personal feelings.

Matthew 21:12-17

**Lord, help us to see where we are displeasing you in the things we do. Convict us Lord so that we may repent and use Your house for what You intended it to be used. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. **
